EviLogic Research

Research & impact evidence for real - world change

EviLogic is the research and impact-evidence arm of SMK Gateway

We help organisations show meaningful change in a way that funders, partners and communities can trust,  bridging the gap between headline numbers and powerful stories.

Our focus: the “missing middle”.

Most impact reporting sits at two extremes: counts of activity, or individual testimonials. We specialise in the structured explanation of what changed, how it changed, and why it matters.

Relationship to SMK Gateway

SMK Gateway leads delivery and community action. EviLogic strengthens the learning, evaluation and evidence, so the work can be sustained, improved and funded.

In practice: we help SMK Gateway and partners show not only that things happened,  but what changed.

What we do

Practical research and evaluation support that fits the realities of delivery.

Impact evaluation that fits real practice

Evaluation approaches that go beyond “survey-only” and reflect how change actually happens.

Evidence planning for funded projects

Baseline/endline, indicators and evidence sources — designed to be doable and credible.

Theory of Change & logic models

Clear models that teams can use for delivery, learning and reporting.

Experience evaluation

Visitor/participant/service-user experience evaluation for learning, wellbeing and engagement contexts.

Transformational narrative building

Credible impact narratives and case studies that funders can “bet on”.

Bid-support add-on

Turn delivery reality into funder-ready evidence, language and structure.

How we work

We combine reach and outcomes data with lived experience — and then build the “middle ground” that explains the pathway of change.

We bring together three ingredients

  • Quant signals: reach, participation, outputs

  • Qual insights: stories, testimonies, lived experience

  • The missing middle: themes, mechanisms, strategic steps and pathways

Methods (kept proportionate)

  • Interviews and facilitated conversations

  • Thematic analysis to surface patterns across stories

  • Simple surveys where appropriate

  • Practical lenses to identify gaps and strengthen strategy

Our lenses

Simple diagnostic views that make blind spots visible and strengthen strategy.

The “Missing Middle” lens

Turns activity counts and testimonials into a clear account of what changed, how it changed, and why it matters.

The scaling lens

Clarifies what you’re trying to scale (up/out/in), what sequence is realistic, and what evidence will prove progress.

Tyrannies & enablers

Identifies the barriers that stop change and the enabling conditions that make it stick — useful for bids and improvement.

Who we work with

We’re set up for place-based, partnership, and community-facing work.

Good fit

  • Community organisations and charities

  • Funded programmes needing credible reporting + learning

  • Partnerships and networks (place-based / civic)

  • Engagement programmes (community engagement, exhibitions, learning, events)

What this looks like in practice

  • Turning scattered stories into 3–6 themes that explain change

  • Creating evidence plans funders trust (not just survey data)

  • Building funder-ready narratives and a clear Theory of Change

  • Highlighting what’s “dropping the ball” in a pathway — and what to fix
